Susan is a marketing and branding expert, with 15+ years experience across a wide range of industries including automotive, tech, entertainment, environment, health & beauty, retail and cause-related. She founded Silicon Beach Marketing at the end of 2011 to support Santa Monica’s emerging startup community.
Conducting business out of a shared workspace in Santa Monica (the epicenter of “Silicon Beach”), she saw the struggles that entrepreneurs face every day. She noticed that a great idea, technological innovation and passion could only get you so far without marketing and branding know-how. Silicon Beach Marketing was founded upon the desire to help her fellow entrepreneurs, and to meet a critical need.
Previous to launching Silicon Beach Marketing, Susan co-founded Farmacy Agency, a lifestyle firm providing socially and environmentally conscious companies with expertise in marketing, branding, social media, public relations and strategic partnerships. Her clients included CODA Automotive, LAcarGUY, City of Santa Monica, Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce and Global Green.
Susan honed her startup skills while working at a newly launched Los Angeles-based magazine called Western Interiors and Design. During her five-year tenure, Susan wore many hats including Director of Partnership Marketing where she developed innovative programs and relationships in order to increase sales, and generate revenue.
Prior to her move to the West Coast, Susan spent a decade at Time Inc. in New York City. A two-time winner of Time Inc.’s “President’s Award,” she worked in the company’s Corporate Marketing Group, as well as renowned publications such as LIFE, Time International and PEOPLE. As PEOPLE magazine’s Director of Entertainment Marketing, Susan developed exclusive partnerships with entertainment properties to support ad sales efforts, and ran the magazine’s charity arm, PEOPLE FIRST. She also created the celebrity-studded Screen Actors Guild post-awards gala in partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and developed and sold sponsorship packages to PEOPLE’s advertisers.
In addition to helping start-ups and companies determine their positioning, articulate their unique brand message, and promote their products and services, Susan is an experienced content marketer and blogger, and is a contributing writer for OrganicAuthority.com. She is also the former Food Editor for HealthyBitchDaily.com, a popular online blog based on the New York Times bestseller, Skinny Bitch, and a guest host of a web TV show called, This Week In Health and Wellness.
Susan is an active member of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce where she sits on the Technology, Hospitality, and Environmental Affairs Committees. She also received a 2011 Chairman’s Award in recognition of her efforts in promoting businesses in Santa Monica, and was the editor for the Chamber’s 2012 Business Guide.
Susan earned an Environmental Studies degree from Franklin & Marshall College, and then attended Colorado School of Mines where she got her geek on studying rocks.
