David Travers – The Dealmaker
David’s college years were not typical, unless you think that having Condoleezza Rice as your college advisor is the norm. When Ms. Rice left the ivory tower for the role of National Security Advisor in the White House, David followed as her executive assistant. We’re sure he has some amazing stories from his time in D.C., but unfortunately they are all classified!
After a stint at eBay and The Walt Disney Company, David joined Rustic Canyon, one of the largest early stage venture capital firms based in Southern California. Rustic Canyon makes 6-8 investments a year, seeking “disruptive business models enabled by technology innovations.” Investments focus on two areas, Internet/Digital Media and CleanTech, and some of Rustic Canyon’s well-known successes include Docstoc, Cooking.com, and InternetBrands.
David is known for his generosity in advising aspiring entrepreneurs, though he still believes that an entrepreneur’s best resource is other entrepreneurs. This is why he is excited about collaborative work environments such as Coloft, and about Rustic Canyon’s upcoming move to 100 Wilshire to be closer to the action and vibe of Silicon Beach. When asked about what opportunities he sees for entrepreneurs today, David mentioned, “mobile commerce, the gaming sector, and clean technology.”
